Had you plugged Milly into the National Grid on the morning of her wedding you could have powered the whole of Dorset for the day. A preposterous notion of course, the plugging in part that is. Allusion to the degree of excitement she manifested is quite fitting though. Had you added Charlie to the supply, fuses would have blown as far away as East Hampshire. It’s good stuff, to see, to experience; all rather energising.
Milly & Charlie live and work in Amsterdam. They returned to Dorset to marry at Athelhampton House. That’s not so far down the road from me so I thought I’d pop along and see what they got up to.

Charlie (in the red) was up early at Athelhampton preparing bits and bobs with his brother and best man Olly (in the purple)…

Meanwhile Milly was a short distance away at her family home, trying to contain her excitement. Mind the pots and pans on your way in…

I have references, available on request…

Milly had bridesmaids tucked away all around the house…

Nothing directly related to the wedding as far as I was aware but I found it highly likeable so I photographed it…

When Milly & Charlie come over from the Netherlands for visits to Dorset, they enter via the kitchen door. They don’t then leave the kitchen until it’s time to sleep. It truly is a fantastic kitchen…

Peek-a-Choo. No need to get my coat; I’m already wearing it…

The true meaning of multi-tasking…

In the words of London street photographer, Gary Cohen, “I used to wait for people to get out of my photo, and now I wait for them to get into it.”..

Show-stealers :~)…

That “I don’t normally publish group photographs but”… thing. The bridesmaids dresses; all made by Charlie’s mother!..

An idea I very much liked…

The time approaches…

Milly & Charlie elected a chilli theme for their wedding, stemming from their combined names. Milly & Charlie, Marley. No, hang on Bob, that wasn’t it. Charlie & Milly, Chilli…

Apparently the world’s hottest chilli is grown in Dorset. Others lay claim to the record and provide data that seems to corroborate those claims but the Dorset Naga has the best URL if not the highest SHU. I digress…

To the House…

I missed the punchline…

Always good to see other aficionados of the school of documentary naturalism at weddings…

A vision…

…of happiness (and of course beauty; goes without saying)…

As well as the legal vows, Milly & Charlie wrote and delivered a set of personal vows (at which juncture I’ll say, as ever, how fantastically accommodating and friendly Dorchester Registrars are whenever I have the privilege of working alongside them; literally working alongside them, shoulder to shoulder at times)…

The ceremony room at Athelhampton House has a fantastic ambience about it, gorgeous decor, the atmosphere of an ornate church for civil ceremonies. Vows and rings exchanged, everyone joined in with a rendition of Stand by Me (had I mentioned how accommodating Dorchester Registrars are? I do believe I had, but I’ll not tire of saying so)…

Is it? Are we? Yes you are!..

During the signing of the register, a surprise for Milly & Charlie; family friend Heather sang. I can’t find words to describe just how exquisite, how moving her voice was. Exquisite makes for a good starting point I suppose and indeed moving but there was more to it again than that. Transportive would be a mere synonym of that already said. I assumed that Heather must sing professionally; a voice I wished I could photograph. She just does it for the pleasure of doing so though…

.and brings everyone else pleasure in the process…

Congratulations Milly & Charlie! While they pop off for a short ride in the wedding car feel free to make your way over to Part Two to follow celebrations >>
