Hampton Court House Wedding : Farah & Ivor : Part One

Your parents met. They married. They had you. You were born on opposite sides of the world, in the same town, the same city, the same village, the same street, a hundred miles apart. You grew up. You met. You met at a party; you met in an office; you met in an elevator. You met at an airport, stranded by an invisible cloud of ash. In a bank. You met in a bank robbery. He rescued you from a bank robbery. You met in a bookshop. She rescued you from a bookshop. You met on the Internet. You rescued each other from the Internet. At first you didn’t notice each other. It was love at first sight. It was a spark that grew slowly but strongly. It was a spark that grew quickly.

You met.

She flopped down into a chair in front of you, at the end of a work shift. You were enchanted.

A new journey commenced.

You met and you scored your dream in the sand.

Hampton Court House Wedding : Farah & Ivor : Part Two

I felt as though I’d fully joined a leg of a journey in progress on Farah & Ivor’s wedding day, indeed as though I’d come on board beforehand even. It’s how I feel with every wedding I photograph but different aspects of what I do and what it means to me tend to become all the more focused from one occasion to another. When I first met with them in person (the booking came before that meeting, something I find to be increasingly the case as I travel the length and breadth of the country), when they travelled to Dorset for a pre-wedding shoot I asked them questions and they asked me questions (Ivor in particular asked me a lot of questions; good questions they were too, one’s that helped me understand all the better what it is that I do). Both are doctors, Ivor a surgeon and Farah engaged in PhD research in the field of cancer (I wonder if that will make her Doctor Doctor come completion). Both are also utterly down to earth and rather unassuming about their status in life. Improving the quality of other’s lives is something I personally find an exciting attribute in another person. Oh and Farah sings in a band. Quietly exciting types. It was both an honour and a true pleasure to witness their wedding day. If you missed the first leg of the day’s journey, indeed the key juncture in the ceremony, it’s all still there to be witnessed in Part One. View full post »

London Wedding : Jake & Conall : Part One

Jake & Conall built it from the ground up, started with the foundations then added extra courses as the value in doing so became apparent. This is my interpretation of events, the making of a wedding day. In common with the most easy-going and fun-filled I’ve witnessed, indeed that I’ve experienced in full along the way, everything centred around the core binary principle, “We get married; we have a party.” No notions of what should be, must be, is always done. Things were then added of course; there is value in things (even the unplanned re-introduction of perceived traditions; “It’s good to go off piste sometimes,” said Jake’s mum that evening as they lay in ambush with handfulls of confetti). There’s value in things that genuinely mean something to the people involved in it all.

I’m especially happy that photographing things was important to Jake & Conall, especially happy all the more that they chose me to come on board to tell their story. I’m happy because I enjoyed it, pure and simple. Jake first contacted me 7 weeks before his and Conall’s wedding date. With 2 weeks to go before the big day I put them through their photographic paces in a dank Dorset car park on a drizzly, dreary day and found they had the stuff of heroes about them. With just a few hours to go before the ceremony itself I joined them at their London home and did that which I do.

A band of friends and family joined them from the off. Those things that get added, well they all add up and require a lot of organisation. That’s what friends and family are for (well that and of course an immeasurable amount more). View full post »

Kirsten - LOVE the mirrored shock shot ;)

(PS: Did you vsco these?)

Phillip Allen - Thanks Kirsten. I did use VSCO across the board, yes, but additionally ran the B&W conversions through ASE to bolster the shadows.

Tony Sale - Lovely photo’s and some great expressions – well captured

francis joseph - Really wonderful story telling here, Phillip.

Derek - Incredible job! Beautiful work on telling their wedding day! I love the processing, the b&w’s look phenomenal.

Chelsey Somohano - The storytelling and emotion in this post is really powerful. I especially love the shot of the groomsman reading his pamphlet during the ceremony.

Vida Carson - The emotion in this blog post is priceless, really beautiful set of photos. Truly.

megan noonan - Great photojournalism here Phillip! I love the shot of him sitting at his desk writing. Beautiful work!

Amber Wilkie - Oh, the fascinators! I love your black and whites during the ceremony – they look so deep!

Simon - Inspiring documentary Photography, I like them a lot.

Fotograf ślubny Lublin - Wonderful photos! Love them all.

Phillip Allen - Thanks all :~)

London Wedding : Jake & Conall : Part Two

A particularly wise celebrant once said that there is virtue in a good party to mark a marriage; it’s not just about the ceremony, central as it is to what a wedding is all about. A good party, he said, seals in people’s minds what that day was. Jake & Conall, with the help of friends and family, certainly pulled off a fantastic party (though don’t forget the ceremony that was being celebrated, still there to be witnessed if you missed it). Having married at Camden Town Hall they treated everyone to a great time at the St. John Bar & Restaurant in Smithfield.

Nobody is going to forget the food in a hurry!

The speeches were choice too… View full post »
