“We should even be able to find you a red telephone box,” Jon informed me enthusiastically as we walked through the streets of St. Albans (which is indeed in Hertfordshire, not Sussex as the title of this post might suggest I thought to be the case; he and Nicola will marry in the latter county in six weeks, one day and counting).
I was mightily impressed by just how deeply the two must have delved into the archives of my blog.
“Yes,” I smiled, “2010 was a big year for telephone boxes for me. 2011 was the year of concrete.” Whilst we now found ourselves in the opening passage of 2012, this thing for concrete is lingering, perhaps. A little earlier as we’d headed out from their home I had to drop off some documents in my car, parked in an underground bay nearby. I couldn’t help but notice… concrete, contrast, apertures; I had to invite them to join me down below.

We didn’t stay down there too long though. It was a nice day up above. Even before Jon had mentioned red telephone boxes though there must have been something lingering strongly in my psyche, from that personal meme. I like wood too, especially wood fashioned in a graphically bold manner. Wood fashioned in a graphically bold manner and painted bright red? There’s no passing it…

We wracked out minds for a suitably nuisance like act to perform for the camera, then decided that just wasn’t befitting of my documentary style…

I have and have had me some highly organised clients over the past few years but none perhaps quite as morganised as Nicola & Jon. Yes I made a note of it (that’s for Nicola & Jon by the way; don’t mind us as we chat) but I had no need to refer to those notes; it very much stuck in my mind :~) Their introductory email to me, No spare suit required, included a link to Google Maps with the route from my home town to their marriage venue already plotted out. That alone immediately made me want to photograph their wedding. The remainder of the email and our subsequent discussions made me feel that way all the more so.

Nicola & Jon are what one might call a binary couple. Not that one is a one and the other is a zero. I’m thinking binary stars. It’s a pleasure to see how strongly they orbit each other. I like how they like feeding ducks together. And geese. And swans.

At the time I’d have liked to have got these shots from a slightly deeper angle but in that first email Nicola & Jon had told me they’d not be requiring me to jump in any water to photograph them. Aside from that, it wouldn’t have done the state of mind of the ducks any good, I imagine…

Having fed the ducks, Nicola & Jon then fed me, and I was on my way very much looking forward to when I next meet with them.
