Jake & Conall are in the final stages of planning their London wedding, a late Autumn affair taking in the architectural splendours of Camden Town Hall for the ceremony (if only the Camden Town Hall Web site presented itself in a form that wasn’t more akin to an elegantly surfaced spread sheet, I’d provide a link; I’ll be back with some evocative photographs though in due course) and the St. John Restaurant at Smithfields, where the content of the carefully considered spreadsheet-like menu evokes sensations of more than a visual feast.
Jake works for a large London law firm, as their pro bono manager. I had to ask too. Okay I’ll de-cloak from the guise of collective ignorance; I had to ask. I assumed he worked for free. He laughed, graciously. His firm takes on a number of cases each year, free of charge, for charities and the like and Jake’s role is to source and manage those cases. This struck me as a very enriching thing to be involved in. Conall is a barista. I might have misheard him, coming to think of it. He does certainly have a deep rooted enthusiasm for coffee though. I just hope he doesn’t sue me for mis-representation. He’d win hands down.
As they’d made the effort to come visit me in Dorset this weekend for a pre-wedding planning meeting and test shoot, the least I could do was to show them some of the delights of the Dorset locale, our fine beaches, wooded parks, verdant English countryside and the like. We ended up shooting in a multi-storey car park instead. I do so like to give my clients the best. The weather was though, for want of a more elegant expression… well, the weather was downright inelegant. It was grotty. Having introduced Jake & Conall to the warmth and more colourful delights of Boscanova where we conducted our planning meeting we decided to see if there was any romance to be found in British architectural brutalism and ended up making our own film-noir, something that somehow reminded me of Get Carter, a Brit-noir one might say; the rain couldn’t even rain properly after all.
And we had a great time of it…

So, I just now Googled the lyrics for the Human League’s rendition of Get Carter. I couldn’t remember how the words went and wondered if some of them might fit in to the visual flow of things. Yes, it was an instrumental track.

Jake, a model of seriousness…

Actually neither he no Conall are at all. Sometimes though on set discipline falls apart…

But we do have a film to make…

Smart phones; the digital age equivalent of VPL…

I always wonder who’s going to crack first…

Cut the blue wire…

Hats off to them, they were really good at this...

Roll credits.
